The Regiment was organized as the U.S. Regiment of Dragoons by Act of Congress, March 2, 1833. On the organization of the Second Regiment of Dragoons, May 23, 1836, its designation was changed to the First Regiment of Dragoons and subsequently, by Act of Congress, August 3, 1861, to the First Regiment of Cavalry.

The history of the First Cavalry is an intriguing study of personalities, technology, opportunity, and decision. The Regiment was instrumental in the expansion and growth of the United States. This page is dedicated to the story of that evolution, the making of the United States and of our Army since 1833, as seen through the lives and experiences of Black Hawk officers, troopers, and their families.
The Regimental Home Page is designed to be a central clearinghouse for Regimental research, information, and resources.At this time, I am looking for primary source materials, historic sites, and bibliographies. Thus far, my search includes, but is not limited to:
Lineage and Honors: The certificates attesting to a unit's lineage and honors are probably the most important documents relating to the history of the unit. Issued by the Army's Center of Military History, they are the unit's birth certificate, deed to organizational properties, and its service record.
Campaign Participation Credit: (Key personalities, units, significant actions, equipment, tactics, organization, strategic setting/current events and overall significance of the action -- minor included actions by contemporary and historically accepted names)

Work/Research in Progress: I am working on a historical series about the First Cavalry Regiment that encompasses the period from 1833 to the present. My intent is to focus on people, events, places, and organizations as experiences through the eyes of officers, troopers, and their families.
