Castle Rock state park photo tour:
Just north of Santa Cruz, on route 17 that descends toward San Francisco are marvelous rock formations at the top of the peninsula ridge. Day use only, this park has connecting hiking trails, several rock formations. Just a short hike above the parking lot is the 'castle rock', a series of sandstone rocks that are eroded in fantastic shapes with huge oak trees growing out of them. One looks over a several hundred feet drop down a steep slope, hence a castle's ramparts. A longer hike goes down to a waterfall. If you follow this along the ridge on the trail to the right you will get to 'goat rock' where rock climbers test their skills and where you have fantastic views south and west to the ocean and Santa Cruz.
