Ocean Beach west of Lompoc
Drive out to the fabulous beach west of town and you'll find sand fleas as long as your fingers, pelicans by the hundreds and perhaps a pea soup fog near dusk.
Colorful rocks also have washed down from the hills onto the beach. Jalama beach, perfect for surfing is down a road on the route into Lompoc. Dig in the sand right at the water's edge to find the giant sand fleas. Dig fast as they burrow away.
See photos of many marine animals found at the beach here on my website of: Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro
How to get there:
Keep going west away from town on Ocean Ave (the same street you got to the Ryon Park on). After passing parts of Vandenberg AFB and a NASA building, and lots of mysterious antennaes, hang a right onto a little road thru salt marshes with a sign to the beach park. Follow this to a nice beach with native plants nicely planted by a clean picnic area and restrooms. Walk under the train trestles to get to the beach. At high tide the path is narrow.
